So I stopped in this joint today and tried a few of their wares. I tried their Farmgirl (Saison) and it was pretty good. But I must admit that I didn't take a whole lot of notice of it because the next sample I tried was the DFGIPA. Now, I have zero idea what the DFG stands for. I'd push for "Damn Fucking Good". Solid A-. Maybe even an A. And I'm a damn picky beer drinker. I don't think I've ever had an A+ beer.

This beer is one very strong IPA. Amazing nose. I just knew I was going to love it before it hit my tongue.

VERY hoppy, lots of that glorious pine-y bitterness and just darn tasty!! Nice strong, lingering hoppy taste on your tongue after you swallow. Not much to add to that description, really. I just love hops. And this sucker delivers!

Now I'm not sure that it's really worth $18 for 64oz of beer (plus buying the growler). Even if it IS 9% ABV (WTF???) And I'm sure not sure I'm going to do it again anytime soon. But I'm not disappointed or angry that I spent it. Not at all. Much like my favorite Bourbon (Bookers), it's spendy, but worth it upon reflection.

My only real problem is that I'm trying to decide if drinking the entire 64oz growler in one sitting by myself is a good idea or not.

I mean, if it goes flat overnight, that would really, really suck.

A few more down the hatch. First up, the Wetback Beer Rejects!

Dos Equis (light & dark), Sol & Tecate. All suck. Solid Ds or Fs all around. I didn't care enough to make notes, I just know I put lime in to try and help them out, to no avail. I'll be sticking to Corona Extra with lime from now on for my semi-tasteless Wetback Cervesas.

On to some KrautBrau: Konig Ludwig Weissbier. I'm digging this one, as evidenced by this being my second six-pack of it. A "Royal Bavarian Hefeweizen". It has a typical wheat beer taste, but there's somehow a bite on the back of my tongue that I really enjoy. Fresh, clean taste with a clean finish. I'd describe it more, but I've been eating really yummy dark chocolate-covered almonds that are rolled in cane sugar & sea salt (I love TRADER JOES!), so I don't trust my tongue's impressions right now. Solid B, maybe B+ or A-.

I'm also on my second six-pack of Leffe. This one's harder to describe, a Belgian beer with a strong depth of complex flavour. I'll try and remember to edit this post when I'm having my next one. I'm leaning towards A- on memory but I'll double check later.

Luckily, there is a new brewery opening about a mile from my workplace. It's called the TRITON BREWING COMPANY. They have a tasting room open right now, albeit without any of their own offerings quite yet. It looks like a decent place to hang out and I'm certainly going to give it a shot after they get their own brews going. I'm headed to Farcebook to add them to keep abreast of their news and stuffis.

Lastly, my very own 1st MR. BEER mix batch has its last six-pack in the fridge. The next-to-last six-pack wasn't too bad. It went from a D- (which was maybe too generous to meself) to a solid C. Considering the "vintage" of the ingredients that went in, that's probably better than I should have expected. But another few weeks of cold lagering and I'll see if there's any improvement. I imagine it should be maybe a B-.

I'm probably attending a beer making class Tuesday and maybe picking up tricks for my second MR. BEER batch. Then it's on to more real beer making. Maybe even a full grain batch instead of using mixes or extracts. I need more kitchen space for even-temperature fermentation. Oh well. We'll see.

Other beer news:

I put in an order for the Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale, but haven't heard if it came in yet.

I also cannot wait for the TRADER JOE'S VINTAGE ALE this year. I only bought one or two bottles last fall/winter season, but I might get a case this year. I imagine it would be awesome with pot roast or roast beef.

I think I'm going to start keeping track of my beer trials (and errors) on here. It's not like anyone's blogging much and at least this can serve as a diary or sorts for me to keep track of my various tastings.

First off: my own creation, a batch of Mr. Beer West Coast Pale Ale mix. Even after something like two months in the cabinet and then a few days in the fridge, still ridiculously cidery. Not really at all potable, at least to me. It tastes like Michelob and bad apple cider mixed. I'm going to let the last six-pack sit in the cabinet for another month and then do a ton of cold-lagering in the fridge in a last-ditch effort to save it. So far, a D--- Oh well...

I still have not started Mr. Beer Batch Two. But I have a reputably-good beer-making kit on hold at the local homebrew store that I will pick up after I take a class. Then, hopefully, I can start brewing my own beer and get decent results.

Other recent trys:
Leinenkugel Summer Shandy: Lemonade & beer mixed. Pretty decent, would be great to down two or three bottles right after working on the lawn on one of these ridiculously hot days. C+++, maybe a B-

Which led to me buying Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat: Vile garbage. I could not force myself to choke down a single full bottle's worth. I gave away 11 of the 12 pack, if that tells you anything. F-

Hoegaarden Witbeir-Biere Blanche: another wheat beer, spicy and light-tasting. Another thirst-quencher. Decent mouthfeel and flavor on the tongue. B

I really need to get to some of the local breweries, too. There are at least four close-by non-chain breweries in I'd love to try. The hard part is finding that dang designated driver.

1. Continued to reduce my debt load.
2. Improved overall health and diet.

Alas! Neither were not done with sufficient vigor, IMO.

Goals for 2011:
1. Continue and accelerate good trends from 2010.
2. Get my home in order and presentable for guests at all times... (ugh, that's a lot of work ahead)
3. Building on #2, get drum room finished and drum chops honed to bad-assery.
4. Obtain a fine-ass wench of a wife to screw to exhaustion every evening.
5. Become a decent if not damned-good shot with firearms.
6. Become more fearless in attacking life and its obstacles.
7. Get physically-fit and ripped.
8. Drink less.

9. (Most important) become a better Christian. Be more loving, more giving and more forgiving.

Tall order, but very if not easily do-able if I actually apply myself.

Good Ride This Weekend

So my buddy Jack has been harassing me about riding. And he arranged a get-together for us this Saturday. I almost didn't go. My body was aching Friday and my bike still hasn't been repaired from my spill back in APRIL! (Yes, I'm an idiot.) And the brakes are feeling spongy some.

So of course, I said I would go!

I got up around 730, moaned and laid in bed for at least 30 minutes. But I finally threw myself into the shower and headed to Dunkin Donuts for a quick breakfast.

I met up Jack & Deb, Bob & Dixie and some new folks (Dee & Cindy) around nine. The morning was pretty chilly and I had zipped off the sleeves to my armored jacket. I put my sweatshirt on at the meeting place and figured that would be good enough.

We rode down south on Post Road and then to Franklin Road which leads to (strangely enough) Franklin, Indiana. Then on to Nineveh Road to Nineveh to Dan & Jo Lee's home at Prince's Lakes. Too many lame roads though. Long roads in residential areas with far too many stop signs. I prefer the really hick roads with lousy pavement and nearly NO red octagons.

And I was wrong about my sweatshirt being warm enough. By the time we stopped about halfway for the old folks to stretch a bit, I was shivering.

But anyway... we got to Prince's Lakes and let the old folks catch their breath in Dan & Jo's lovely home. I love houses like that. Homey and in the quiet, relative middle of nowhere. Leaving, I put in my windbreaker / rain liner on my jacket for warmth. Just what the doctor ordered.

Dan knows the area very well, and he led us around the same lake I rode around back in 2006, detailed in THIS post. Heading SW after the lake, we quickly hit some great twisties. We rode down to Story, Indiana and ate at the "Famous" Story Inn. We elected to eat on the patio and I paid $7 for a Brat w/ Kraut, chips, slaw & soda. Not bad, actually (though the lack of spicy mustard should be a crime!).

Unfortunately, I started zoning out on the way home. But I held on and made it safe and sound.

Did about 150 miles, lots of it in twisties where even 35MPH was pushing it. A lot shorter than I would have liked, but considering how tired I got I suppose I should be glad we didn't go farther.

We're expecting to do it again soon. Looking forward to it. Too bad no one took any pictures. We need to make one of the females be our shutterbug.

Anyway... St. Germain's elderberry liquor. Good stuff. Check that, GREAT stuff.

By its lonesome, it's sweet-smelling, but far less sweet on the tongue than you'd expect from its scent. It adds a strong floral note, as you'd expect. And complexity.

I like the stuff quite a bit, especially in a Gin & Tonic.

I tried a "Parisian Martini" (recipe gleaned from HERE) this evening. I made the vodka variation.

It was... pretty good. Understated; sweet without being cloying. Very complex and almost confusing on the tongue, in a good way. Again, the St. Germain's tastes like it should be sweeter than it is. This makes for an interesting play on your taste buds.

But I think a good dry gin would have served this cocktail far better. I didn't want to use the Bombay Sapphire I have on hand as I thought the Sapphire's botanicals might be too weird with the elderflower.

Anyway, check the St. Germain's site for recipes. I think it's an interesting addition to any liquor cabinet and well worth the money spent.

Every one of us should be pushing our lawmakers to make recording ALL public servants with or without their consent or even knowledge 100% legal in every circumstance.

What possible moral, logical or legal reason can they put forth to justify their fear of public exposure of their actions? If any state actor cannot conduct themselves according to the law, they deserve to have their illegal and unethical actions fully exposed the general public with all appropriate disciplinary actions applying.

We need to get on this posthaste and remove any and all lawmakers that disagree. In full effect, they're arguing that the states' employees are above the law and should be protected from their misdeeds.

On reading up on it over at LRC.com, I bought THIS book. It's a very fun read and I think it's great advice.

It has been an interesting experiment. For about a month, I've been eschewing carbs as much as possible (not always easy, especially eating out), and focusing on meat, fat, fruits and veggies. I've also started doing pushups and deep knee bends. I also try to walk more around the massive building in which I work. A punching bag and a pullup bar would be great investments too.

The author espouses the "80/20 rule". Simply put, it's the idea that if you follow his guidelines 80% of the time, you're still going to do much, much better than eating "normally".

My weaknesses have been mostly at breakfast, since I love toast and biscuits and gravy. But I'm fairly sure that I'm saving money since I'm not buying nearly as much bread. And I'm skipping snacks like pretzels and chips altogether. I've also ditched pasta and all starchy side dishes with dinner. Usually, I just stick with meat and veggies.

I'm hungry a lot of the time, but it's strangely become easier to be hungry. Especially reflecting on the phrase "Hunger is fat leaving your body". I skip lunch a few times a week and don't miss is all that much.

I've lost 5 lbs according to the scale at work (which, admittedly might be off but if it's consistent I'm still shedding pounds). If I stopped drinking beer and hard liquor, I'd probably be much further along in my weight loss. But hey... you can't expect miracles all the time!

Here's to losing another 30 and finally getting my guns.

EDIT: I cannot believe I forgot about spaghetti squash as an alternative for pasta! Man, I am a dimwit sometimes!

Maker's Mark has come out with their new Maker's 46.

Good stuff. On the nose, it's like regular Maker's, with a little harsher kick. On the tongue, I like the spiciness and how it's not that much different than the stock MM. Good burn in the back of the throat, again stronger than the stock MM but not overwhelming. Very nice lingering finish too. Regular MM has a sweet, soft nature that's kind of luxurious on the tongue. The 46 is that plus a nice burn on top.

It's working very well right now as a chaser to my Sam Adams Boston Lager (in its signature glass, of course).

I might be a regular with this one too. I look forward to trying this one in a Manhattan and Mint Julip (Julep?). The added spiciness should marry really well.

So regular MM, MM46 and Bookers will probably be my standard Bourbon Whiskeys for my vice cabinet. (The Knob Creek I bought last week is okay, but not near as good as the 46.) Then I just need to find the Rittenhouse Rye that's eluding me lately.

I really need to stop talking to the folks in liquor stores. They're pointing out far too many interesting things lately. On the other hand, the kind lady in Vine & Table saved me from dropping any money on tequila or a pear-flavoured vodka today.

EDIT: One of the sweetest things about alcoholic beverages is the scent. I am currently sniffing my empty whiskey glass (actually a Sam Adams tasting glass from the Jamaican Plains distillery outside of Bahston). The remnant scent is amazing. Intoxicating, even. The same with the beer glass. I'd put those scents right up there with the finest flowers, perfumes or even the scent of a woman. Well... okay maybe not THAT good. But they're right up there, I'm telling you!

EDIT EDIT: Weird... I'm tasting a slight char on my tongue after a while sipping this stuff for probably too long. :) I simply didn't notice it before. It's certainly not an unpleasant taste. Just something of note. Disclosure: I'm probably on shot 3 right now. It's slow-going, but definitely nice. The utterly decadent and buttery caramel chunk I'm nibbling on every once in a while compliments the Bourbon nicely. It's almost an orgasm in my mouth.

My Brother's 1st Crafted Beer

Is pretty dang good. It foams REAL quick though... I spilled some not expecting it to foam so fast and it overflowed out of my glass.

It has an odd flavour profile. It starts off... something. Sort of a pale ale? Then you get hit with a burst of citrus. And that lingers, but not overly so. The finish seems to change too. Before I tasted more clean hops, now I'm tasting bitter grapefruit. Maybe that's a sediment issue?

Because it doesn't appear to have been filtered; there are small chunks in my glass. But I like that. I intend to bottle condition all of my beer if I ever get around to making it. I really like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and that's strong on citrus and non-filtered too.

Jason said he modeled his beer "target" on Sam Adams Summer Ale. But I like this one better than the Sam's Summer.

Good job, dude. Now I need to get started on my own.

UPDATE: (a whole four minutes after the post) The second beer poured very nicely in a controlled manner. Though now the head is gone. Need a happy medium... how do you get head to appear in a glass after it's poured?
