Have you never changed your mind about anything? Have you never looked back at your life, and realized that you were misdirected for a certain amount of time? In my research, I can't find anywhere labeling him as "Grand Wizard". He was the leader of his local chapter, and served as a recruiter, but nowhere ever lists him as a "Grand Wizard". Also, my research shows he only paid his dues for one year, and then dropped out of the KKK. Although, it does mention that he still made contact with the Grand Wizard via letter in the 1950s.
People make mistakes. Yeah, this one is pretty big. But, if you're serious about this religious binge that you are on - then you need to understand that people who make mistakes, deserve forgiveness. I know I've wronged many people in my life, both verbally, mentally, and physically - and I regret A LOT of those things I have done. Sadly, they are still black marks on my record that will NEVER go away.
Have you ever seen "American History X"??? It's an AMAZING film, about how people's perspectives are altered based on their surroundings. First, Derek is convinced that he needs to hate all black people, later when he actually spends time with them, his feelings are changed, and he makes a good friend.
I'm not defending this guy, or what he said. My point is this: If you're truly attempting to live a somewhat Christian life, then you need to learn to stop judging people so strictly. Jesus didn't do it. He hung out with the people that no one else would. Forgiveness, it's an important thing - because we all make mistakes. And a lot of people make a lot of mistakes when they are 24 years old - some people join the KKK. Other kill people in cold blood over $5.00, and get away with it.
Have you ever made a mistake, and then wished that someone would forgive you for it? Has your irrational attitude and blunt voice ever gotten you in trouble with someone, and you wished they would forgive you for it? Despite the fact that things would never be the same as they were? Or are you too good for that? Do you stand by everything you've ever done, your entire life?
Everyone has a history. Everyone has a past. Everyone makes mistakes. Robert Byrd is just like everyone else.

If you actually READ a Bible instead of listening to lovey-dovey sermons you would know that.
Byrd is a POS. And if he were a Republican, the media would NEVER omit his KKK membership in any article about him. But he's a liberal Democrat, so the label's never hung on him.
The irony of a KKK member worried about a dogfighter burning in Hell is amusing to say the very least.
