SportsNation Bill Simmons: We're about 4 hours early for "Yup, these are my readers..."
From HERE.
I wonder about stuff like this... there are some hotties at my job, but not many. I often wonder where that "Get FIRED" line of conduct really is.
But then again, my division chief almost drools on the office hottie's boobs and hasn't been fired yet. So maybe it's harder to get canned than I think.

Milky Madness...
"State Agriculture Secretary Dennis C. Wolff said advertising one brand of milk as free from artificial hormones implies that competitors' milk is not safe, and it often comes with what he said is an unjustified higher price."
"Unjustified high price"? How can you say it's "unjustified"?? If anyone buys it,
doesn't that show the price is justified? How paternalistic is this shit?
The more the government seems to oppose the more organic side of milk, the more I'm intrigued to try it. Too bad most ways to get it involve buying a share of a cow.

Amen.
"It occurs to me that, in these wartime years, I have a lot more in common with my left-wing associates than the right. Except that there's one stumbling block which makes them look askance at libertarians: "What about the poor?"
Now, I have no objection to helping the poor. We donate to our local food bank. I help refurbish computers so that poor kids can have one for their schoolwork. Part of my volunteer work for the Red Cross involves helping families who have experienced personal disasters (like a house fire). Indeed, one of the aspects I like about where we live is that when a family suffers a fire, or has a child with special medical needs, collection boxes will pop up in all the local businesses, and I'm among the many kicking in.
I'm all for helping the poor. I just think it should be private, and voluntary.
At this point I usually hear the objection, "But that's not enough! Small scale solutions like that will never solve the problem!"
Today it hit me: why the hell not?
To be more specific: the question should not be how do increase the scope of the (private) solution. It should be, why is the problem so damned big?
Let's face it: if you're living in a society in which anywhere from one-quarter to one-half of the population can't meet their basic needs through their own efforts -- where a half-trillion dollar enterprise is needed to "help the poor" -- then there is something fundamentally wrong with your society; and redistributing wealth, from those who have managed to succeed to those who have not, is avoiding the real problem. Whether the problem is the legions of overpaid bureaucratic parasites, the erosion of savings through inflation, confiscatory taxation, the countless costs of busybody legislation, or all of the above, you need to fix the underlying cause before you can ever really help people.
Put another way: if transfusing a few units of blood doesn't help the patient's condition, you'd better start looking for the bleeding....not look for more blood donors.
As a (small-l) libertarian, I am working toward a society where everyone can sustain himself/herself; where being poor is a misfortune and not a chronic condition; and where the needy will be at most a few percent of the population. In that society, private charity will be more than sufficient to help them. And I'll be there, contributing."
Good points. The ONLY thing the welfare state has created is a near-permanent dependency underclass. They have no stake in the future, so they trash theirs. Crime and bastard kids are their only legacy. Thanks so much LBJ you stupid liberal fuck.

What A POS Liar
The son of a bitch is saying:
"``We have put together a documented portfolio that frankly puts their lies in such a total light of absurdity and indecency, that should they ever rear their ugly heads again, we have every single ‘t’ crossed and ‘i’ dotted, and I welcome that in a sense,'' Kerry said following a morning address to the South Shore Chamber fo Commerce. ``It’s a shame we weren’t able to produce all that at the time.''
From HERE.
What the little bitch isn't saying is that ALL he had to do to dispel the "lies" about his record was sign ONE form to release his full naval records to the press. He refused to do it then. He could have done it at ANY time while he was being "Swift Boated". Why was it that he didn't? What in that official record did he have to fear?
And what's changed now? How many "changes" to that record has he requested since then? And instead of a "portfolio"... why not the whole thing? Why is he still afraid to release his records without exception to the public?

The first set up the second. And the second sold out half of Europe to the Soviet machine.

I just don't care about sentimentality. Someone needs to explain it a little better than the Bullshit History Books do.
Especially since we've adopted most of the USSR's policies in this country of late.

Mike Movie Madness (Reviews) Triple-Play Style...
First off: Michael Clayton. Has George Clooney, and I usually dislike him. But I really liked him in this one. Not because he did such a good job, but because overall the movie was very good. It's understated, maybe too much for most movie fans. But I liked how the typical over-emoting was not simply not present. I don't recall a score, but it may have simply been unobtrusive. I hate when the music score tries to tell you how to feel. TV's Law & Order's has been AWFUL for this for a very long time. It's a pathetic tactic to compensate for bad acting or directing or both.
Good suspenseful movie, well acted. I'll go 4/5. Just because of how non-typical Hollywood it is.
30 Days of Night. Vampire flick. Interesting twist on the horror movie monster staple. Bestial vampires, very much so. Not great, but decent popcorn movie. Cool camera work, very harried, but not annoyingly so. And not so bad as to cause the viewer to miss much of anything. 3/5
American Gangster. No really great acting on anyone's part. Decent story, also somewhat understated. And gratefully so, as far as I'm concerned. No goofy antics like Training Day. No speeches like in Gladiator.
The thing that strikes me about Denzel's character is how utterly rational it is that he become what he becomes. In all ways.
It makes you think how sad it is that some folks' best shot could be dealing drugs. And how messed up it is that we give cops so much power over our lives, regardless if we have to suffer the consequences of that fact or not. 4/5

The Golden Compass Boycott
Funny, I thought liberals liked boycotts. Boycotts were the answer to "non-dolphin safe tuna" and South Africa, right?
But now those that think boycotts are the answer to punishing companies for bad behavior are calling this instance "censorship". Which only reveals their ignorance. Boycotts are not censorship. Censorship is only done by the government and its agencies. Boycotts are the free market in action.
So really their bleating amounts to: "Waaaaaaaaaaahhhh! Christians won't want to pay for entertainment they find offensive!"
Gee... Go figure! Really? And in other breaking news, water is wet. Finding truth not in advertising is so wrong?
"Go see the movie before you judge!" seems to be the typically whinging. You mean, AFTER collecting the $$$ for admission and giving the film money... got it. Perfectly sensible.
Telling folks that they might not want to financially reward a writer deliberately trying to offend believers is wrong... how, exactly?
This is exactly why JK Rowlings didn't trumpet the whole "Dumbledore is Gay!" thing until AFTER the last book was safely a best-seller.
She weasel-ish-ly did so after the fact, and is lauded for being brave. When in fact it was quite cowardly. She didn't have the courage of her convictions. At least not enough to risk losing a few million pounds UK.
This Pullman guy at least had the balls to write books about actually killing God (according to the Urban Legends page). He's not a cowardly pussy like Rowlings.
I'm sure the film's studio execs are sweating some bullets now. Serves them right for not thinking things through. There are very few secrets anymore. Stuff like this is sure to come out.

The Good Vs. Evil Football Game Review - First Half
Jason texts me "Go Pats!". Thanks, Jay!
1st quarter
12:36 God awful "reception" by the Colts called by the ref with the perfect POV. How hard is that job? How much more do they need to pay for good refs?
I have to wonder if the NFL WANTS the Colts to win to punish the "evil" Pats.
10:15 (not even sure about the time) I have to wonder this ref'ing even further, maybe. That looked like offensive pass interference but my Mom was over here distracting me from the game at that precise moment. And I am without Tivo.
2nd quarter - around 9:00 awful pass interference call on Hobbes. The NFL's refs are starting to look as pathetic and biased as the NBA's.

Screw Prohibition Anyway!
I was thinking about this yesterday. I found some Makers Mark Bourbon cherries at a gourmet stores. But even these $9.99 per jar cherries have crappy artificial ingredients and the taste is not as good as I'd hoped. There's a fake taste I can't identify that just turns me off. It's not so bad in a cocktail, but eating the cherries out of the jar or after finishing off the drink... it's just not right.
It got me wondering what kind of cherries are used to make maraschino (cocktail) cherries and if I could make my own, better tasting version.
So I found this article on the above link. Of course I found yet more government idiocy messing things up. Yet again. This time, it's a legacy from Prohibition. Asses.
But, to turn this into a positive, I think I'm going to get some dried cherries from Trader Joes and soak them in a simple syrup. Then I'm going to make one batch soaking in a 50% simple syrup / 50% bourbon solution and see how those turn out.
I'll try to remember to post about them here when I taste the results.
If this idea doesn't work, I think I'll blanch or go through the first steps of canning cherries and work from there.
Of course, if anyone has a line on real Maraschino cherries, I'm all ears.
P.S.:
Wonderful commentary, from the link: "I grew up in Oregon where (I am sad to say) the process for creating maraschino cherries was developed. We had several canneries in town and it was amazing to see what the brine did to people’s hands. I won’t go into detail and, yes, the brine is long gone by the time you eat them, but still it was very bad."
I have come to believe that more of those traces of processing go into our bodies than the FDA would like us to believe.
The bottom line: the more natural and less processed, the better.
OOOO: Found myself a recipe HERE.

Fearing The Truth...
A scientist figures out how to ID the racial makeup of a particular donor of DNA. In this case, the sample was from a black serial killer. And folks don't like the technology because "it's racist"?
God forbid we might actually catch the serial killer faster! This technology does NOTHING except help the police zero in on suspects and eliminate bad leads. Where's the downside? Do blacks LIKE living amongst rapists and murderers? (Stupid question... if your name is Jesse or Al, you support them!)
As for it "being expensive", how about the man hours wasted on a completely invalid suspect profile? Oh yeah, the police union will probably oppose this tech being used because it might affect their overtime!

Too True...
"Suppose an oleaginous, fast-talking individual with slicked-back hair, wearing an expensive but poorly fitting suit and dirty shoes, showed up at your door, accompanied by several other similar-looking persons making promises – complete with well-rehearsed answers about the vacuum cleaners they were selling – just as you were sitting down to eat. Would you invite them in for a demonstration? Of course you wouldn't.
...
So the question that then begs an answer is, if the majority of people are smart enough to avoid being taken advantage of by hustlers, how is it and why is it that people are willing to be taken advantage of by politicians?
...
Let me be frank, as in honest, not "Barney." ... Had President Bush told the fawning crowds that he would do all in his power to provide amnesty for illegals, free a convicted illegal-alien rapist and murderer from death row, while keeping border agents in prison for doing their jobs – what do you think the chances are he would have enjoyed the support of the conservative base?"
Dead on.
Which is why I support Ron Paul. Because he is the ONLY one that never backs down from his positions, has a consistent voting history and no contradictions in his record that I have heard of. Even when it's likely to appear badly to those that operate solely from soundbites, he is open and honest. Guiliani looked like stoopid in those first debates, but was loudly cheered on. Rudy openly confessed ignorance (and was almost certainly lying too boot) and folks ate it up.
Fools and useful idiots.
Is The Douche Talking To Eleanor's Ghost Again?
From HERE.
NEW YORK (AP) - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton told an audience of women political activists Monday that she relied on the wise words of former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt to help her through tough times on the campaign trail.
"She said, 'You know, if you're going to be involved in politics you have to grow skin as thick as a rhinoceros,'" the presidential candidate said. "So occasionally, I'll be sitting somewhere and I'll be listening to someone perhaps not saying the kindest things about me. And I'll look down at my hand and I'll sort of pinch my skin to make sure it still has the requisite thickness I know Eleanor Roosevelt expects me to have."
What a delusional cunt. I'm still hoping she has a fatal embolism. And, yes, I know that makes me a bad person. I don't really care. She's a foul bitch.

OUCH!
and he was trying to lose."
From HERE.
Look at an Analog TV In Wal-Mart...
From HERE:
"According to the WSJ piece, there may be as many as 69 million TV sets that will become useless once the federal edict goes into effect. So, to make sure that people with antiquated analog sets can still use their TVs, converter boxes will be produced which will go on sale in January, 2008. These devices are expected to cost consumers around $50 to $70 each, according to the article.
...
Big deal, you say, what's wrong with the TV industry producing such converter boxes? They'll keep things running smoothly, and consumers will save money by not being forced to buy new televisions. The answer is nothing – except that the federal government has "set aside $1.5 billion to subsidize" these devices!"
Brilliant. Truly brilliant.
I do disagree with the author of my linked column. The greater injustice is the FCC assholes telling everyone to move forward to HDTV.
I hate HDTV for watching TV and movies. There is not one single HDTV unit I have seen that has motion that flows along as smoothly as analog televisions.
But I don't get a say. Neither do millions of folks that are perfectly happy with their current TVs.
Some days I really hope the shooting war starts sooner rather than later.

Idle Musings...
But white folks want to work there. And when denied, they sue her into bankruptcy after winning a racial discrimination suit. Is this even an injustice? How so?
Too Telling...
God forgive us. The men who froze at Valley Forge, who crawled up the beaches of Normandy into the murderous teeth of Nazi machine gun fire, who faced undreamed of horrors in steamy jungles thousands of miles from the comforts of home, did not fight so that we could let our country slip into the hands of those who would re-make us in the image of our enemies. Whether you agree with every cause that Americans have spilled their blood for or not, we can acknowledge that most of them believed that they were fighting for freedom, to protect the whisper-fragile American dream. They didn't sacrifice to give us Moscow on the Potomac.
We owe them, ourselves, and the future generations who must live with the world we give them, more, much more, than to let this happen with so little struggle.
There was once a dream that was America. And friends, this is not it. This is not it.
Dead on, there. As I noted over on Shane's blog, the government is outlawing dissent. They put up "free speech zones" around their politicians. They make it illegal to promote causes around election times. They limit how much you can spend to promote your causes via your candidates.
And now they have the Patriot Act to disappear you if you become "dangerous".
What a fucked up world. God help us all.

Tooo Stoopid Fer Wurdz
And now the maturing Bridget Jones economy has begun to feature big-ticket items. In 2003, the Diamond Trading Company introduced the "right-hand ring," a diamond for women with no marital prospects but longing for a rock. ("Your left hand is your heart; your right hand is your voice," one ad explains.)
The article describes how the "Sex In The City" lifestyle of glamourized sluttery is going worldwide. The "right-hand ring" is to (I guess) give these loons a reason to buy a really expensive ring for themselves since no one else will.
My first thought was "Are you freaking kidding me?" I thought girls buying themselves flowers for VD was goofy. Now this? I guess De Beers (however spelled) figures they're losing dough with fewer women tying the knot, so they have to get their Blood Diamond money somehow...
What would the male equivalent of this stupidity be? I'm drawing a major blank here.
